June 29: In covering a story, a media outlet
is not finding guilt. It is simply reporting the news that [for example] a
lawsuit has been filed against Mr. Trump, and ideally putting the complaint in
context. Unproven allegations are just that - unproven, and should be identified
that way. ... Proof comes later, at trial. But the November election will
come well before any trial. And while Mr. Trump is presumed innocent, we are
permitted — no, we are obligated — to analyze [a] case’s viability ....

May 12:
Trump threatens to ax White House press briefings ... In his Friday morning tweetstorm, the president also suggested
that his administration
could do
away with briefings for the press and instead give out written statements.
...
@realDonaldTrump
...Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future
"press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???
" ... with respect to the President's suggestion that as a very busy person, he
doesn't have time to ensure that his spokespeople are accurately portraying his
actions — it is difficult to know how to respond — except to say, being truthful
with the American people is a core responsibility of the job," Schiff [House
Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam] said. "If he did not want to
willingly undertake even the minimal requirements of the Presidency, it would
have been far better for him to have considered that before he chose to run for
the highest office in the land."

May 21: [Secretary
of State Rex] Tillerson held the press conference with the Saudi foreign
minister, Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, but it appeared that only foreign reporters
were present. Journalists from the United States were left scrambling to figure
out what happened.

May 29: "It is my opinion that many of the
leaks coming out of the White House are fabricated lies made up by the #FakeNews
media," Trump tweeted ....

of the Press Is ‘Disgusting’

October 20: Fox News
host Chris Wallace leveled sharp criticism
in an article ... against some of his colleagues who have echoed President
Trump and used their perch at the network to attack the media as "fake news."
"If they want to say they like Trump, or that they're upset with the Democrats,
that's fine," Wallace continued. "That's opinion. That's what they do for a
living."
The comments from Wallace, who hosts "Fox News Sunday" and is widely considered
to be one of the main faces of the Fox News' hard news division, represent
perhaps the most searing criticism the network's opinion division has faced in
recent memory from a colleague.

October 20: It's quite common to hear
opinion hosts [like Sean Hannity], who dominate Fox News' prime time
lineup, routinely trash news reports critical of Trump and, more
broadly, the mainstream media as a whole [comprising hard news].
Hannity, who is the highest-profile personality most guilty of
this, has devoted large swaths of his show over the past year to delegitimizing
the media at large. He regularly focuses his opening monologue on assailing the
press.

September 25: General Motors has built one
of the most exclusive, impenetrable and expensive cars in the world to transport
the most important person in the free world.
The Secret Service will give up a little info, but the company won't talk about
it.
"We cannot comment on this," Cadillac spokesman Andrew Lipman wrote in an email.
So what's the big secret? It's President Donald Trump's new limousine that
Cadillac built, called "The Beast."
