Undated: ... the Trump administration’s
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
reneged on a proposed ban of the brain-damaging pesticide, chlorpyrifos.
Obama’s EPA had proposed the ban in 2015, the result of a decade-long effort by
public interest groups to protect American children from the neurotoxic
insecticide.

Trump Sends Mixed Message on Food Safety Standards
... The Trump campaign pitched rolling back food safety regulations in a fact
sheet, arguing they are burdensome to farmers and “overkill.” But the campaign
later deleted the proposal from its website and offered no explanation.

May 31: In his
first remarks
to FDA staff in mid-May, newly confirmed FDA Commissioner
Scott Gottlieb, MD, promised ongoing support for the agency’s food safety
programs.
But keeping that promise may prove challenging. The Trump Administration’s
Fiscal 2018 budget request, submitted to Congress on May 23, 2017, just one
week after Dr. Gottlieb’s pep talk, proposes to slash the agency’s budget by
more than $870 million, or nearly one-third, from about $2.76 billion to $1.89
billion.

August 28:
The FDA’s Consumer
Protection Warnings Are Falling Under Trump ... The
number of agency warning letters is at its lowest level since 2008.
From the toothpaste you use to the lipstick you apply, the medicines you take to
the food you eat, the Food and Drug Administration is supposed to stand between
consumers and faulty products that could do them harm. It oversees $2.4
trillion of the U.S. economy—some 20 cents of every dollar Americans
spend.
But in the first months of Donald Trump’s presidency, the FDA has shown signs it
may be retreating from its mission.

October 2:
Critics pan USDA plan to move food safety work to trade office
A Trump administration plan to shift work on
international food safety issues to a trade office under the supervision of a
former animal-drug company executive is sparking an outcry from internal and
external critics who say the move signals the U.S. is more interested in
promoting exports than in science-based public health standards.
Current and former officials from both the Agriculture Department and the FDA
have been raising alarm internally and publicly about the plan to take the
office away from the USDA’s public health arm and give it to the agency’s newly
created trade arm. At stake, they say, is the country’s status as a global
leader on food safety and quality.

Now It’s About Food Safety.
Citing President Donald Trump's calls for deregulation, Republican lawmakers and
the chicken industry are aggressively lobbying to speed up poultry inspection

December 4: The Trump Administration Won’t
Let Scientists Set Food Standards
... the Codex Alimentarius Commission, but it’s the reason there’s
only six items food poisoning experts won’t eat. The committee of 180
countries sets international food safety standards; almost every nation’s food
safety laws are built on their recommendations. Part of that is because most
nations offer scientists who use the latest research to determine what’s safe to
put in your mouth and what isn’t. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Trump
administration wants to change this.

Undated: Trump's proposed budget could
unravel food safety net for millions in Texas
Local advocates are speaking out for low income families after President Donald
Trump unveiled his budget proposal, which includes cuts to programs that help
with things like grocery and energy bills.
The SNAP program is a supplemental program, so when it's not enough for local
families, the
Central Texas Food Bank steps in to make sure everyone can put food on the
table.
The food bank partners with the organization
Feeding Texas, which
has called President Trump's proposed $193 billion cut to nutrition programs,
"reckless and cruel."

January 4: Trump Administration Indefinitely
Delays Key Food Safety Protections ...
All Americans, regardless of their political affiliation, want safe food.
That’s why the Food Safety Modernization Act passed with broad bipartisan
support. Make no mistake:
The Trump administration is today undermining that landmark legislation by
indefinitely delaying enforcement of the rules that would put it into effect.
The announcement is a rotten anniversary present, given that FSMA was
signed into law on this
very day seven long years ago.
FSMA was intended to cover the entire food chain, from farm to fork, and the
Trump administration’s new guidance would create a gap in that safety chain by
exempting, at least for now, some of those who harvest, package, and hold food
produced on farms. In addition, the guidance would eliminate the written
company-to-company food safety assurances required under the final FSMA rules

on Healthy Food
President Trump is likely to launch new salvos in his full-scale war on healthy
food today, when he addresses the
American Farm Bureau

Since taking office, Trump has rolled back decades of food policy progress,
including efforts to make food safer and healthier,
feed hungry Americans,
reduce farm pollution, and make food production more transparent.

February 8: Currently, under the Affordable
Care Act, food establishments have until May 7 to comply with requirements to
add calorie information labels to the food items they serve and offer, according
to the
US Food and Drug Administration.
Those requirements apply to chain restaurants or food establishments that have
20 or more locations and vending machine operators who own or operate 20 or more
machines.
On Tuesday, the
House passed legislation that would amend exactly how those restaurants and
retail food businesses are to provide the calorie count information to their
customers.

June 22: Trump wants to reshape the US food
safety system. The idea is great, and terrible.
The American food safety system is poised for a big shake-up. This week,
president Donald Trump
released a plan (pdf) that would bring the nation’s sprawling food safety
forces under the watch of a single agency.
It would be a significant change to the US regulatory system, with merits and
pitfalls. Right now, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is in charge of
ensuring all meat, poultry, and catfish are safe to eat. The Department of
Health and Human Services (HHS) has designated the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) to oversee just about everything else. Here’s a breakdown of what a
massive consolidation might mean:
