August 8:

The US President said:  "North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen."

North Korea has repeatedly threatened war as claims to have obtained ICBMs which can reach the mainland US.

War is feared to be looming over the crisis as both sides talk up the possibility of military action in the Korean Peninsula.

August 9: North Korea said its leader Kim Jong Un was weighing whether to strike the US Pacific territory of Guam, just hours after Donald Trump vowed to meet Pyongyang’s threats “with fire and fury like the world has never seen”. The comments, released via North Korea’s state news agency, appear to escalate a dangerous game of chicken as the US struggles to bring the nuclear aspirant and its rapidly developing missile programme into line. The Korean People’s Army said the strike plan would be “put into practice in a multi-current and consecutive way any moment” once the supreme leader had made a decision about targeting the small island territory of fewer than 200,000 people, which lies south of Japan.

December 8: Can Congress rein in ‘fire and fury’?

The first use of nuclear weapons occurred Aug. 6, 1945. The second occurred three days later. That there has not been a third is testimony to the skill and sobriety of 12 presidents and many other people, here and abroad. Today, however, North Korea’s nuclear bellicosity coincides with the incontinent tweeting, rhetorical taunts and other evidence of the frivolity and instability of the 13th president of the nuclear era. His almost daily descents from the previous day’s unprecedentedly bad behavior are prompting urgent thinking about the constitutional allocation of war responsibilities, and especially about authority to use nuclear weapons.

January 6: Donald Trump has rejected doubts over his mental health raised in a bombshell new book [Fire and Fury], describing the book as "fiction" and the author as a "fraud".

His remarks followed an earlier rebuttal on Twitter, in which the president claimed he was a "very stable genius" who was "like, very smart".

Michael Wolff's new book suggests that even the president's closest advisors question his fitness for office.

The row has overshadowed key talks on the Republican party's 2018 agenda.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with senior party members at Camp David on Saturday, the president disputed Mr Wolff's account, claiming it was a "work of fiction"
