What is "fake news"? That's a
simple one ... "fake news" is not news at all, but rather is information
presented to you which cannot be verified or does not prove out over time and/or
which is blatantly untrue at the outset. Mere errors, of course, are not
considered fake news since they are simply mistakes made by humans.
If you are a person who believes that the media deals only in "fake news", all
you have to do is follow a story from beginning to end (say, for example, from
2015 through the most current date) to see what the outcome of a story is. Did
it prove out? Did it fall apart? This is a much more accurate way to verify
information than trusting a friend or other individual to provide information to
you. You may trust your friend, but people do make mistakes. Also some people lie,
and some people base their beliefs on opinions rather than on truth.
How to tell the difference between real news and fake
news? One example of both is Fox. If you watch carefully, you'll see that Fox
has well-respected real news broadcasts (for example Fox News Sunday with Chris
Wallace) but also produces separate "news/entertainment" programs called "opinion news" (for
example Sean Hannity). This mixture gives the impression that "opinion news" is
the same as real news. It's not, of course.
"Opinion news" is information based on what the host and others in that particular broadcast believe --
which may or may not be factual information. It's up to the opinions viewer-listener-reader to
carefully discern which is entertainment and which is factual, appreciating real news for its accuracy and
perhaps enjoying opinion news for its personal opinions which you may or may not
share.
Most standard news broadcasters (for example
NYTimes,
NBC, Fox
News,
ABC,
CBS,
CNN,
PBS) specialize in real news. Real news sometimes has mistakes and may include
opinions, yes, but since real news is carefully vetted for facts, real news is something
you can generally trust. Opinions (yours, mine, TV or internet opinions) are
always suspect, even when they might be noted within a standard news broadcast.
Therefore, we must all resist getting caught up in unvetted opinions and
instead look for the facts of any story [do a little informed research] and ignore the personal comments.
For some good notes about the difference between real news and opinion news, See 2017 October 20
link below for article by Fox's respected Chris Wallace commenting on the
"news side" vs the "opinion side" of Fox (simply using Fox Opinions as an
example, although there are many other news media presenting "Opinion News"),
or the 2018 March 17 article about an
internal Fox disagreement.
Or you might be interested in seeing our Net Neutrality page, December 15, 2017
for Real News compared to an opinion at December 16, 2017, both from Fox.
Do "real news" reporters also inject opinion? Of course they do,
because a bit of opinion makes a story more readable. But the basics of their
reporting must be carefully vetted for accuracy to prevent the report from
straying into the arena of "opinion news". It can be tough to distinguish, but
careful study makes it absolutely possible.

Undated: "Fake
news," a form of propaganda, is nothing new, but it is far more widespread today
than it used to be. Thanks to the internet and social media, information that
decades ago might have been heard or read by relatively few can now reach
millions of people around the world in a matter of minutes. Sadly, this is also
true for misinformation. This has become a growing problem, with serious
consequences.
Being able to evaluate the accuracy of what you read or hear, and refraining
from spreading false stories, will help you and others avoid the repercussions
of fake news.

June 29: In covering a story, a media outlet
is not finding guilt. It is simply reporting the news [for example, when a
lawsuit has been filed against Mr. Trump], and ideally putting the complaint in
context. Unproven allegations are just that - unproven, and should be identified
that way. ... Proof [one way or the other] comes later, at trial. But the November election will
come well before any trial. And while Mr. Trump is presumed innocent, we are
permitted — no, we are obligated — to analyze [a] case’s viability ....

January 6: ...
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a declassified
report on Russia’s interference in the U.S. presidential election Friday
afternoon, hours after briefing President-elect Donald Trump on its contents.
The report states that the CIA, the FBI, and NSA all believe that Russian
President Vladimir Putin “ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the
U.S. presidential election.”
The intelligence community
believes Russia’s goals “were to undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic
process, denigrate Secretary [Hillary] Clinton, and harm her electability and
potential presidency.” The Russian government, the report states, “developed a
clear preference for President-elect Trump” over his Democratic rival. [Trump has continued with ongoing efforts to denigrate Hillary and others

This (relatively) small episode [of Trump faking a Time Magazine cover] is illustrative of two important things
about Donald Trump:
1. He has a flexible definition of "true"
2. He's willing to use the credibility of the media to boost himself when it
serves his purposes

items for all of 2017 which had errors]

setting the record straight. In almost every case, media outlets issued
corrections. When reporters made mistakes, they acknowledged them repeatedly. In

February 15:
Trump's Fake News ... Deep breaths and fact-checking might save America.
Donald Trump tends to call whatever he dislikes "fake news," from
inconvenient facts to unfavorable reporting. Even though the President himself
is less a font of truth and more a spigot of self-serving exaggeration and
insults.
But Trump isn't all wrong when he labels reporting against him as fictitious
or slanted. Reporters have become so enraged with the President that in their
hurry to lambaste him, they sometimes forget about fact checking and standard
quality controls.

February 17: Trump pushes back against 'Fake
News Media' coverage of Russian meddling
A federal grand jury on Friday indicted 13 Russians and three Russian companies
for allegedly interfering in the 2016 presidential election, in a case brought
by FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller that detailed a plot to “sow discord in
the U.S. political system.”
[Trump] quote-retweeted the vice president of Facebook ads, Rob Goldman,
who had written that the majority of the Russian spending on ads occurred after
the election, and that swaying the election was not the main goal of those ads.
“The Fake News Media never fails,” Trump tweeted, presumably referring to
coverage he believes has played down those details.
Goldman, however, had gone on to clarify that “the Russian campaign was
certainly in favor of Trump.”

February 22: Trump cries 'Fake News' on CNN

problem instantly'
"I never said 'give teachers guns' like was stated on Fake News @CNN & @NBC."
Tweeted Trump on Thursday morning, referring to a listening session he held with
high school teachers and students on Wednesday.
"What I said was to look at the possibility of giving 'concealed guns to gun
adept teachers with military or special training experience - only the best," he
said in a follow-up tweet. 20% of teachers, a lot, would now be able to
immediately fire back if a savage sicko came to a school with bad intentions.
Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do
this. Far more assets at much less cost than guards. A 'gun free' school is a
magnet for bad people. ATTACKS WOULD END!"
"Trump suggests arming teachers to prevent school shootings," a headline on NBC
News' homepage read on Thursday morning. "Trump suggests arming teachers as a
solution to increase school safety," a CNN headline ran.

He also told the audience--as he has done before--that despite his relentless

March 8: Sinclair TV Group Requires Local
News Anchors to Echo President Trump in Bashing 'Fake News'
The script, which is required to be read during news time rather than using up
commercial spots, includes anchors saying they’re “extremely proud of the
quality, balanced journalism that [proper news brand name of local station]
produces.” The anchors are then supposed to follow by saying, “But I’m [we are]
concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one-sided news stories
plaguing our country.”
The message continues: “The sharing of biased and false news has become all too
common on social media. More alarming, national media outlets are publishing
these same fake stories without checking facts first. Unfortunately, some
members of the national media are using their platforms to push their own
personal bias and agenda to control ‘exactly what people think’ … This is
extremely dangerous to our democracy ...”
A staffer who wished to remain anonymous told CNN that everyone at the station
was uncomfortable reading the script. While the message isn’t explicitly

Trump’s often-inaccurate accusation about “fake news.”

Fake news tends to have the real news beat in one area: novelty. That's why

Fake political news was especially viral. These stories ended up reaching over

Trump briefly answered questions from a small contingent of reporters in the
Oval Office ..., including one inquiry about whether he would make additional
staff changes.

mean they wrote a story about staff changes today that was very false. We made a

Robert said of Welker. “For the President to call her dishonest is unfair.”

July 30:
Georg Pazderski, leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AFD) party,
was ordered to scrub its website of the accusation and issue a correction
stating that the German ministry "paid no money whatsoever to support the
election campaign of Hillary Clinton,” Deutsche
Welle news reported Monday.
The court ruled that the false accusations recklessly jeopardized “public
confidence" in the federal ministry by making the claim that a German agency had
intervened in the U.S. election.

wants international sanctions against Russia lifted, didn’t immediately respond
to a request for comment.

November 2: President
Trump accused
the media Friday of “creating violence” by publishing and broadcasting false
stories.
Asked by a reporter at the White House if his campaign rhetoric incites
violence, Mr.
Trump retorted, “No. You know what? You’re creating violence by your
question. You are … you.”
He said “a lot of reporters are creating violence by not writing the truth.”
“The fake news is creating violence,”
Mr. Trump
said. “The people that support
Trump and the
people that support us, which is a lot of people — most people, many people —
those people know when a story is true and they know when a story is false.”

November 21: President Donald Trump slammed
the news media on Wednesday, saying the press was blaming him for traffic jams
ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
"You just can’t win with the Fake News Media," he wrote. "A big story today is
that because I have pushed so hard and gotten Gasoline Prices so low, more
people are driving and I have caused traffic jams throughout our Great Nation.
Sorry everyone!"
Earlier, the president said oil prices were getting lower and thanked Saudi
Arabia for the shift – prices plunged to the lowest this year before recovering
slightly on Wednesday.

November 27: Trump dismisses the economic
impact of climate change — except at his golf course
“I don’t believe it,” Trump says, but his business dealings indicate otherwise.
But Trump has taken a very different attitude when it comes to the business he
owns.
As
Politico detailed during the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump International
Golf Links sought to build a seawall to protect a golf course he owns in Ireland
from “global warming and its effects.”
In a permit application for the wall, Trump International Golf Links cited
scientific studies indicating that a rise in sea level could result in damaging
erosion in a bay near the golf course.

After defending the use of tear gas against migrants, Trump inflated statistics
about crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, among other things.
Here are his claims, made during a pair of campaign rallies and a law
enforcement round table in Mississippi to
bolster Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith in her runoff election, and the
facts.
