May 31: The Trump administration is imposing
tariffs on steel
and aluminum
imports from Europe, Canada and Mexico after a month-long exemption expires at
midnight. Steel imports will be taxed at 25 percent and aluminum at 10 percent
under proclamations Mr. Trump
signed in March and
reconfirmed Thursday.
That may mean higher prices on everything from SUVs to cans of beer and soda as
companies cope with the higher cost of imported materials as well as the
expected retaliatory tariffs on U.S. exports from angry trading partners.

June 25: How Europe could fight back if
Trump taxes car imports
EU officials are likely to challenge the legality of any US tariffs on cars.
It's already filed a complaint over US metals tariffs at the World Trade
Organization.
"The United States has sought to use the threat of trade restrictions as
leverage to obtain concessions from the European Union," EU trade official
Cecilia Malmström said last month. "This is not the way we do business, and
certainly not between longstanding partners, friends and allies."

June 28: Italy blocks EU summit agreement
until migration demands met
Italy's prime minister refused to approve an EU summit statement on Thursday,
telling fellow leaders that they must first meet his demands on migration, in an
unusual showdown that underscored deep divisions over the sensitive issue.
The move by Giuseppe Conte, who is attending his first European Union summit,
surprised other leaders and forced summit chairman Donald Tusk and European
Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to cancel a news conference planned for
Thursday evening.

June 28: Trump Is Trying to Break the
European Union
“During a private meeting at the White House in late April, Trump was discussing
trade with French President Emmanuel Macron. At one point, he asked Macron, ‘Why
don’t you leave the E.U.?’ and said that if France exited the union, Trump would
offer it a bilateral trade deal with better terms than the E.U. as a whole gets
from the United States, according to two European officials. The White House did
not dispute the officials’ account, but declined to comment.”
“Let’s set aside for a moment the point that Trump’s proposal reveals a basic
lack of understanding of Macron’s views and those of the people who elected him.
This is an instance of the president of the United States offering an incentive
to dismantle an organization of America’s allies, against stated U.S. government
policy.”
”Trump has been publicly trashing the E.U. and NATO since his campaign, but the
pace and viciousness of his attacks have increased.”

June 28: Trump: EU was ‘set up to take
advantage’ of US
“We love the countries of the European Union. But the European Union, of course,
was set up to take advantage of the United States,” Trump
said at a rally in North Dakota on Wednesday. “And you know what, we can’t
let that happen.”

June 28:
The consensus was to avoid inciting the combustible US president.
As leaders convened in Brussels on Thursday for one of their busiest summits in
recent memory, Trump provided fresh outrage — an
assertion at a rally in North Dakota that “the European Union, of course,
was set up to take advantage of the United States.”
June 28: Trade Spat to Turn U.S. Into Top EU
Soybean Supplier
While looming tariffs are likely to curb American exports of the commodity to
China, opportunities are opening up in the European Union, the world’s
second-largest importer.
The dispute has boosted prices in Brazil, the top shipper, forcing EU processors
to look elsewhere for supplies. That’s likely to mean that the U.S. will
overtake Brazil as the biggest seller to the 28-nation bloc next season,
according to
Rabobank International Ltd.

June 29: EU migration deal: what was agreed
and will it work?
Key questions about the European leaders’ overnight talks in Brussels
After a marathon session in Brussels, European leaders claim to have struck a
deal on how to handle refugees and irregular migrants. Here is a look at what
was agreed, and whether it will be enough to end the bloc’s political crisis
over migration and save Angela Merkel’s fragile coalition government in Germany.
Although the number of migrants arriving in Europe has fallen by 90% since their
2015 peak, the fallout has fuelled a political crisis between and within EU
capitals.

July 15: Trump: The European Union is our
‘foe’
‘We have a lot of foes. I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us
in trade. Now, you wouldn’t think of the European Union, but they’re a foe.’
That’s the first thing Donald Trump said when
Jeff Glor of the “CBS Evening News” asked him to identify America’s “biggest
foe globally right now.”
And what did the president of the European Union have to say in response?
On Twitter: America and the EU are
best friends. Whoever says we are foes is spreading fake news.

July 26: The glaring problem with Trump’s EU
soybean deal
... Juncker, as the head of the European Commission, has little power to promise
increased soybean or energy purchases, as they rely on private companies
business decisions and “market conditions.”
“[The LNG and soybean pledge is] a bit of a stunt,” an EU official told the
Journal. “You give something without giving anything.”
Paul Donovan, chief economist at UBS Global Wealth Management, agreed. “The real
winner here would appear to be the European Union. The U.S. auto tax threat was
reversed in exchange for nothing that means anything,” [the art of the deal]

July 30: USDA said it
would use a Depression-era farm support fund to make direct payments to
producers of soybeans, sorghum, corn, wheat, cotton, dairy and pork.
... some of the benefits could go to Chinese-owned companies.
“The pork industry is dominated by very large corporations,” said Chris Hurt, an
agricultural economist at Purdue University in Indiana. “The largest hog
producer in the U.S., Smithfield, is owned by a Chinese company.”
And EU officials downplayed Trump’s claim they had made a commitment to buy more
U.S. soybeans.
“And where does the bailout stop? What about people who use steel and aluminum?
What about other goods that have been targeted by our foreign competitors? Are
they going to get bailouts too?”

December 20: Denmark approves plan to send
unwanted migrants to 'virus' island
The Danish parliament is set to vote on a measure that would see migrants
sentenced to deportation but unable to return home sent to a 20-hectare island.
The island is currently used by scientists from the Technical University of
Denmark to research swine flu and rabies vaccines, among others, earning it the
nickname "Virus Island" from the right-wing Danish People's Party.
The UN criticised the plan earlier this month and it is seen as a symptom of
Denmark's
increasingly hostile stance towards immigration.
