January 25: 'America No Longer Matters.'
Davos Isn't Worried About President Trump
A
year after Trump’s election raised the prospect of revolution, the elites have
regained their confidence. The revolt had been put down, stock markets are up,
and globalism is making a comeback.
“The phenomenon of Trump is no longer interesting to people,” said Timothy
Snyder, a Yale historian whose book about tyranny Trump helped send shooting up
the best-seller list. ... “A year ago, everyone thought Trump was just
fascinating,” Snyder added. “I spend a lot of my life in Europe, and what I see
is that the Europeans have moved on. America no longer matters.”

January 25: ‘America First’ Backfires on
Trump in Davos
President Donald Trump arrived to a muted reception at the World Economic Forum
in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday, greeted instead by a surge of media reports
citing Asian and European political leaders, economists and banking chiefs who
are critical of his plan to impose steep tariffs on certain goods imported into
the U.S.
He was snubbed on several fronts even before he arrived. Canadian Prime Minister
Justin Trudeau, for example, announced on
Wednesday that his country would be joining a large Pacific trade pact with
10 other nations. The U.S. was not invited into the deal.

January 26: President Donald Trump has told
global finance leaders he will always put the US first when it comes to trade,
but "that does not mean America alone".
Mr Trump's election campaign centered on America First, aiming to protect local
manufacturers from foreign competition.
This policy appeared to contradict the Davos conference's goal of promoting
globalisation and co-operation.

January 26: Trump, a real estate mogul and
former reality TV star, had never been invited to Davos before. He basked in the
praise of several executives, who applauded his tax cuts.
The first sitting U.S. president to visit the annual summit since Bill Clinton
in 2000, Trump was greeted on arrival by hundreds of curious delegates who
snapped pictures as he entered the congress center.
Two European executives told Reuters they were staying away from the dinner
because they did not want to shake Trump’s hand. One of them consulted with his
wife and children before deciding to dine elsewhere.

January 26: “When people are forgotten the
world becomes fractured,” President Donald Trump observed to the Davos forum in
his breathlessly-awaited speech Friday. That he himself was the fracturer-in-chief
must have entered the minds of more than a few in the crowded hall.

January 26: In theory, Donald Trump’s trip
to Davos should have been a disaster. After all, Trump campaigned as a populist,
national-sovereignty-loving politician who was opposed to everything the
globalists at Davos claim to cherish: free trade and an American-led
international order. But in reality, Trump’s trip to Davos has been one of the
singular triumphs of his presidency.

January 26: “ ... many of the business and
political elites remain dismissive of him, privately rolling eyes and using
words like ‘madman,’ but there was excitement about economic growth, and the tax
cuts and regulatory rollback he has ushered in ..." ... Davos was not enemy
territory for Trump. Rather, it was Mar-a-Lago in the Swiss Alps, a place where
Trump could comfortably bask in the admiration of his fellow plutocrats.

January 26: Trump at Davos: We're your
friends, not your patsies
The president stuck to his script, ticked off the accomplishments of his first
year in office, offered to be a friend and trading partner to the rest of the
world, but left no doubt: his job is to put America First.

January 26:
“Well of the years that I’ve been
here at the economic forum, I’ve rarely heard that very civilised audience laugh
at a speech and very rarely heard them boo a speech. And we heard both there.
Laughter when the president said he didn’t understand why he gets so much media
attention and boos when he mentioned fake news. This was Donald Trump, the
diplomat, reaching out to people, sticking very closely to the prepared text
that had been written well ahead of this event. The problem of course, while he
says that ‘I’m looking after America and every country should look after
itself’, history tells us that when countries do just look after themselves, it
can end very badly for the world. Having said that, there are a lot of people in
there, billionaires, big company owners, who are earning a lot of money as a
result of the Donald Trump tax cuts. So there was a warm reception at least from
some of the room.”

the US president, leaders of major European corporations went around the table
and praised their host's pro-business tax reform.

What Trump’s
every-country-for-itself rhetoric gets wrong
about Davos ... inside the forum, political
leaders mingle with entrepreneurs, scientists and humanists. It’s a menagerie of
power, money, brains and innovative thinking mainly, though not exclusively,
being
channeled toward social good.
So what happens when the “leader
of the free world” walks into the room and promotes a form of isolationism
as his recommended method for creating that shared future?

February 2: I was one of only two protestors
at Trump’s Davos speech. Why?
In the days leading up to Trump’s talk, there were rumors that
all the African leaders
would walk out together and that the Young Global Leaders would too. I asked
around but no one seemed to know. Ever since I had heard that Trump was coming
to Davos I had wondered what kind of protest I could do. I didn’t know what
would be possible given the tight security, but finally decided to don a “not my
president” t-shirt.
... I showed up early at the Congress
Center and noticed floods of people leaving, including many who said they
couldn’t stand to watch him.
There were dozens of journalists and photographers waiting [outside] for the
speech to end. They interviewed me, and I met another woman, Sasha
Kramer, who had had a similar idea: she was wearing a white T-shirt that
said “I stand with Haiti” and walked out during Trump’s speech. Despite the
rumors, there had been no massive boycott or walkout. It was just the two of us.
