February 8: Donald Trump wrong that murder rate is highest in 47 years ... "The murder rate in our country is the highest it’s been in 47 years, right?" Trump said. "Did you know that? Forty-seven years. I used to use that -- I’d say that in a speech and everybody was surprised, because the press doesn’t tell it like it is. It wasn’t to their advantage to say that. But the murder rate is the highest it’s been in, I guess, from 45 to 47 years."

There’s a reason the press didn’t tout that figure — the statement was incorrect.

September 6: New murder stats prove Trump’s “American carnage” doesn’t exist

The president invoked “American carnage” at his inauguration and when Sessions was sworn in in February, he said: “My judgement is this is not a blip and we’re seeing, I’m afraid, a longer-term trend of violent crime going up, which is not what we want in America.”

But a new report released Tuesday by the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan think tank, suggests that the spike in homicides in 2015 and 2016 may have been an aberration — not a trend.

This is in keeping with what many criminologists have said from the get-go.

May 5: Trump's knife crime claim: how do the US and UK compare?

We looked at murder rates from both weapons over a five-year period.

There were 34 firearm homicides in the US per million of population in 2016, compared with 0.48 shooting-related murders in the UK.

Knife murders are also higher stateside: there were 4.96 homicides “due to knives or cutting instruments” in the US for every million of population in 2016.

In Britain there were 3.26 homicides involving a sharp instrument per million people in the year from April 2016 to March 2017.

May 11: Only in America: Trump’s solution to London knife crime rate – guns

... Karim Brohi, the head of trauma surgery at the Royal London Hospital, has ridiculed the idea that guns are part of the solution.

“There is more we can all do to combat this violence, but … gunshot wounds are at least twice as lethal as knife injuries and more difficult to repair,” he said.

But a new report released Tuesday by the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan think tank, suggests that the spike in homicides in 2015 and 2016 may have been an aberration — not a trend.

According to the Brennan Center analysis, crime rates in 2017 are trending as low as at any time since 1990. The report suggests that the homicide rate in 2017 will decline by 2.5 percent from 2016, reversing what was politicized by some as a surging crime rate.

This is in keeping with what many criminologists have said from the get-go.

May 29: Republican Group Will Run Ad on 'Fox & Friends' Urging Congress to Hold Trump Accountable ...

Republicans for the Rule of Law (RRL), a conservative group whose stated purpose is “defending the institutions of our republic,” will advertise on Fox & Friends next week to urge members of Congress to hold President Donald Trump accountable for the findings in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

Chris Truax, a spokesperson and legal adviser for RRL, told Newsweek that Congress must properly investigate Mueller’s findings in order to address the “corruption of our Constitution from within.”

"Everybody — Republicans and Democrats but especially Republicans — need to step up and say, 'Look, this is bigger than the politics of the day, this is about our democratic institutions.' If we don't defend them, that will have an impact on our country for decades to come," he said. "President Trump still does not want to admit that this happened and that's wrong, absurd and dangerous. Republicans need to stop enabling this behavior."

GOP members should be “appalled at their casual disregard for the law, the Constitution and everything that makes America great,” Truax added. “Americans of all political affiliations should recoil at the plain fact that senior members of the administration put their own interests above the national security of the United States.”
