Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates said Thursday that he does not
see eye-to-eye with President Donald Trump’s America-first approach to foreign
aid but will try in his White House meeting with the president to convince him
that continuing such global spending is in the nation’s best interests.
Gates is scheduled to meet with the president Thursday afternoon in the Oval
Office, where he said he will tailor his pitch on continued foreign aid spending
to Trump’s worldview.

Bill Gates says Trump asked the difference between HIV and HPV
The billionaire Microsoft founder also said it was "kind of scary how much he
knew about my daughter's appearance."
“In both of those two meetings he asked me if vaccines weren't a bad thing
because he was considering a commission to look into ill-effects of vaccines,”
Gates said. “And somebody, Robert Kennedy Jr., was advising him that vaccines
were causing bad things and I said, ‘No, that is a dead end, that would be a bad
thing, do not do that.’”
There were laughs and groans from the audience after Gates added: “Both times he
wanted to know the difference between HIV and HPV and so I was able to explain
that those are things that are rarely confused with each other.”

August 21: In Age of Trump, Bill Gates Uses
Blog to Highlight Teacher Voice, Programs Helping Immigrant, Refugee Children
Bill Gates, one of the largest sources of K-12 philanthropy in the country, is
using his perch to highlight the importance of teacher voice and the value of
educating immigrant students.
He posted about 2018 Teacher of the Year Mandy Manning, who works at a center
for new immigrant students at a high school in Spokane, Washington, as one of
his “heroes in the field” on
his Gates Note blog Tuesday.
Manning told The 74 after her selection as Teacher of the Year in April that,
since President Donald Trump was elected and has limited admissions of refugees
and cracked down on undocumented immigrants, she has redoubled her efforts to
make sure students know they’re welcome in her classroom.

September 20: At least one famous and
influential person, Bill Gates, is willing to step up and recognize the
intellectual merits of
Donald Trump, currently excoriated by even senior members of his

The Guardian, many people will be surprised to learn from the mouth of
Microsoft’s founder that “Donald Trump is ‘open-minded’ about policies and might
be persuaded on foreign aid.”

26: Bill Gates holds out climate hope, despite Trump
Gates has met several times with Trump, most recently in March. And while he has
yet to get concrete positive action from the president on climate or other
issues close to his heart, he refuses to talk critically about the president.
Pressed several times on the matter in an "Axios on HBO" interview, he briefly
acknowledged areas where the executive branch hadn't taken action before quickly
shifting to point out others who have acted — including Congress, business
leaders and other countries.
Why it matters: In his post-Microsoft life, Gates has emerged as one of
the world's biggest philanthropists, focusing on global health and other issues.
Many of those benefitting from Gates Foundation investments are also those
feeling the impact of climate change most severely. Gates has also been an
investor in a number of energy projects, including Terrapower, a small-scale
nuclear energy startup.

“Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates, who’s in D.C. this week to

the U.S.’ souring relationships with Europe and China — sparked by the Trump
administration’s tariffs — won’t hurt long-term global health or climate change
goals…” (Owens, 12/11).

Bill Gates Ignores Trump,
Focuses Instead on Toilets
Last year's annual letter from Bill and Melinda Gates was all about Trump. This
year not so much.
Bill and Melinda Gates issued their
annual "state of the world" memorandum earlier this week. It's many pages
long, so if you're interested in knowing what's essential, my excellent editor
Diana Ransom posted the most startling highlights.
What struck me, personally, about the Gates letter wasn't what it contained but
who it ignored.
Last year's annual Gates letter was a huge broadside fired directly at
President Donald
Trump. Here are some excerpts:
"The world is not a safer place when more people are sick or hungry [but]
President Trump proposed severe cuts to foreign aid."
"The America First worldview concerns me. It's not that the United States
shouldn't look out for its people. The question is how best to do that. My view
is that engaging with the world has proven over time to benefit everyone,
including Americans, more than withdrawing does."
"The duties of the president of the United States is to role model American
values in the world. I wish our president would treat people, and especially
women, with more respect when he speaks and tweets."
In this year's letter, though, Trump doesn't make a single appearance. Instead
the Gates spend hundreds of words on nuts-and-bolts philanthropy like the need
for third world toilets and the disproportionate negative impact of bovine
flatulence on world climate.
