a crowd of South Carolina business leaders that he's still the straight-talking,

Trump alleged in a tweet storm early Saturday that former President Barack Obama
had wiretapped Trump Tower before his election win in November — an accusation
that a senior U.S. official told NBC News is baseless.
Trump did not provide any evidence for the claims, which followed an interview

A former policy adviser to President Obama [Ben Rhodes] is firing
back at President Trump's claim that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower, saying it
didn't happen — at least not under Obama's orders.
"No President can order a wiretap. Those restrictions were put in place to
protect citizens from people like you," Ben Rhodes tweeted Saturday morning.
"We are in the midst of a civilization-warping crisis of public trust, and the
President's allegations today demand the thorough and dispassionate attention of

the hours after a massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School school in
Parkland, Florida, that left 17 dead and many injured, President Trump issued a
series of tweets offering, at first,
his condolences and then, the next morning,
an admonishment of the shooter's "neighbors and classmates" for not
reporting his behavior. He later gave a televised speech to mixed reactions.
Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama leaned on empathy and action when addressing
the country after similar tragedies. None of their words helped abate mass
shootings in America, but the top-down response from the president matters to
not only the victims' families but also the nation as a whole. Abandoning our
humanity at times of tragedy can only make this national sickness worse.

A Justice Department review is expected to criticize the former F.B.I.
deputy director, Andrew G. McCabe, for authorizing the disclosure of information
about a continuing investigation to journalists, according to four people
familiar with the inquiry.
Such a damning report would give President Trump new ammunition to criticize Mr.
McCabe, who is at the center of Mr. Trump’s theory that “deep state” actors

Trump: Obama was on brink of 'a big war' with North Korea. Not true, ex-Obama
aides say
President Donald Trump faced immediate blowback on Friday for his assertion that
his predecessor in the Oval Office, Barack Obama, was on the brink of starting
"a big war" with North Korea.
Trump made the claim
during a rambling news conference on Friday, in which he declared
a national emergency to free up federal money for his controversial border
wall, suggested he would delay a deadline for hiking tariffs on China, and
touted his success in negotiations with North Korea.
Trump said Obama told him North Korea's nuclear weapons program presented the
greatest threat to the United States during a 2016 meeting in the White House
just after Trump won the presidential election.
"He told me he was so close to starting a big war with North Korea," Trump
recounted.
"It is absolutely ridiculous to suggest that the Obama administration was
considering anything like that," said Michael Fuchs, who served as Obama's
deputy assistant secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific affairs. He said
Trump was simply "lying" about that exchange.
