The United States Attorney General (A.G.) is the chief lawyer of the Federal government of the United States and head of the United States Department of Justice per 28 U.S.C. § 503, concerned with all legal affairs.

Under the Appointments Clause of the United States Constitution, the officeholder is nominated by the President of the United States and appointed with the advice and consent of the United States Senate. The U.S. Constitution provides that civil officers of the United States, which would include the U.S. Attorney General, may be impeached by Congress for treason, bribery or high crimes and misdemeanors.[7] The United States Attorney General may be removed at will by the President of the United States under the Supreme Court decision Myers v. United States, which found that executive branch officials may be removed without the consent of any entity.[8] In cases of the federal death penalty, the power to seek the death penalty rests with the U.S. Attorney General.

January 30:
Trump fires defiant acting attorney general

The Obama administration official serving as acting chief had instructed lawyers there not to defend President Trump's executive order.

"The acting Attorney General, Sally Yates, has betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States. This order was approved as to form and legality by the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel," a White House statement said. "Ms. Yates is an Obama Administration appointee who is weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration."

"That's preposterous. Everyone knows she's a career prosecutor for nearly three decades, well-respected by serious members of both parties," said the Yates associate, who asked not to be named. "That dog won't hunt."

February 9:
Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions was sworn in Thursday as the 84th attorney general of the United States as President Trump signed three executive actions aimed at bolstering law enforcement.

Sessions, a former federal prosecutor and Alabama attorney general, pledged to attack a crime problem that he described as "a dangerous permanent trend that has places the health and safety of the American people at risk.''

Sessions' remarks on crime during the brief White House swearing-in ceremony come after Trump's disputed claims in recent days about record rising crime throughout the United States. FBI statistics have shown a sustained decline in violent offenses across the U.S., in recent years

April 9: President Donald Trump vented at his Justice Department, his Cabinet members and his former political opponents in searing remarks Monday evening.

The remarks came during a round-table discussion at the White House that was intended to discuss the administration's response to a suspected chemical weapons attack carried out by the government of Syria against its own people.

But in remarks to the press before the meeting's business, Trump spent more time ripping special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Trump tweeted that Matthew Whitaker, Sessions’ chief of staff, will take over as the acting head of the Justice Department, adding that a permanent replacement will be announced soon.
