Angela Dorothea Merkel (née
Kasner, born 17 July 1954) is a German politician serving as
Chancellor of Germany since 2005. She served as the leader of the
centre-right
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) from 2000 to 2018.[8]
Merkel has been widely described as the de facto leader of the
European Union,[9]
the most powerful woman in the world,[10]
and by many commentators as the leader of the
Free World.[11][12][13][14]

Undated: Time person of the year
“Fear has never been a good adviser, neither in our personal lives nor in our
society,” Merkel told a middle-aged woman who rose from an audience on Sept. 3
to ask what the Chancellor intended to do to prevent “Islamization,” with so
many Muslims entering the country. “Cultures and societies that are shaped by
fear,” Merkel said, “will without doubt not get a grip on the future.”

June 9:
Merkel's G-20 Climate Alliance Is Crumbling
The German chancellor had been hoping to isolate Donald Trump on climate issues
at the upcoming G-20 summit in Hamburg. But Merkel's hoped-for alliance is
crumbling, underscoring Germany's relative political weakness globally. Many
countries are wary of angering the United States.

A Single Photo Captured President Trump's Approach to the G7 Summit
This is not the first time an image of German Chancellor Angela Merkel literally
talking down to an American president has made the rounds online.
Recall back in 2015, almost three years ago to the day, when Merkel, with
outstretched arms, stood before President Obama, seated on a bench at that
year’s Group of 7 summit.
The picture went viral, but appeared to draw more chatter about looking like a
scene from “The Sound of Music” than about actual relations between the two
friends.
Fast forward to June 9, the second day of this year’s G-7 summit in Canada, when
a photographer captured a striking image of President Trump surrounded by a host
of world leaders.
With both hands down on the table in front of her [Merkel], she’s leaning in
during what appears to be a tense discussion, staring straight at her American
counterpart and cast in a light that presents her as the central figure, the
power.

About Each Other

July 9: President Donald Trump reportedly
greeted German Chancellor Angela Merkel with a massive bill when she visited him
soon after he entered the White House.
“Angela, you owe me $1 trillion,” Trump said, referring to the gulf between what
Germany agreed to contribute to its defense under a NATO arrangement and what it
actually spent over the previous 14 years, an official briefed on the meeting
told
The Wall Street Journal in a story published Sunday.
Trump’s brash remark to Merkel more than a year ago showcases his insistence
that U.S. allies pay more for their defense—a stance he has maintained ahead of
the NATO summit later this week.
“The United States is spending far more on NATO than any other Country. This is
not fair, nor is it acceptable,” Trump tweeted Monday morning. “While these
countries have been increasing their contributions since I took office, they
must do much more. Germany is at 1%, the U.S. is at 4%.”

February 9:
Coal bites the dust in Germany, Europe's greenest nation
A leading mainstream politician in a major industrial nation this week said the
country will phase out coal power, completely, in less than two decades' time.
Imagine the blowback if an Australian politician - Labor or Liberal - tried
that.
But this is not the first time German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pulled a
stunt like this. In 2011, a few months after Japan's
Fukushima disaster, she
abruptly ordered the shutdown of almost half the country’s 27 nuclear
reactors and set a timeline to take the rest offline by 2022.
The loudest protests came from people who thought that wasn’t fast enough.
This week some muttered about higher energy prices and energy security concerns
over Merkel’s 2038 coal phase-out decision. But just as loud were complaints
that it could all be done a decade faster if the government really put its mind
to it.
