Undated:  Andrew George McCabe (born March 18, 1968[5]) is a former American attorney who served as the Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from February 2016 to January 2018.

From May 9, 2017, to August 2, 2017, McCabe served as the Acting Director of the FBI following James Comey's dismissal by President Donald Trump. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions stated that McCabe was one of several candidates under consideration for Director. President Trump ultimately chose Christopher A. Wray, the former Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department's Criminal Division, to succeed Comey.[6] Once Wray was sworn in, McCabe returned to the position of Deputy Director.[7]

Sessions fired McCabe on March 16, 2018, 26 hours before his scheduled retirement.[8][9] Sessions announced that he based his decision on reports from the DOJ Inspector General and the FBI's disciplinary office saying that McCabe had made unauthorized releases of information to the media and had "lacked candor" in talking about it. McCabe denied that he had ever been dishonest and charged that his firing was politically motivated.[10][11][12]

McCabe is married to Jill McCabe, a pediatrician, who was a Democratic candidate for the Virginia state senate in 2015.[62] They have two children, a son and a daughter.[63]

McCabe is a triathlete who biked 35 miles (56 km) to work from his home in Virginia.[20]

March 1: Andrew McCabe, Ex-Deputy Director of F.B.I., Will Be Faulted for Leaks

A Justice Department review is expected to criticize the former F.B.I. deputy director, Andrew G. McCabe, for authorizing the disclosure of information about a continuing investigation to journalists, according to four people familiar with the inquiry.

Such a damning report would give President Trump new ammunition to criticize Mr. McCabe, who is at the center of Mr. Trump’s theory that “deep state” actors inside the F.B.I. have been working to sabotage his presidency. But Mr. McCabe’s disclosures to the news media do not fit neatly into that assumption: They contributed to a negative article about Hillary Clinton and the Obama administration’s Justice Department — not Mr. Trump.

March 16: Andrew G. McCabe, the former F.B.I. deputy director and a frequent target of President Trump’s scorn, was fired Friday after Attorney General Jeff Sessions rejected an appeal that would have let him retire this weekend.

Mr. McCabe promptly declared that his firing, and Mr. Trump’s persistent needling, were intended to undermine the special counsel’s investigation in which he is a potential witness.

Mr. McCabe is accused in a yet-to-be-released internal report of failing to be forthcoming about a conversation he authorized between F.B.I. officials and a journalist.

In a statement released late Friday, Mr. Sessions said that Mr. McCabe had shown a lack of candor under oath on multiple occasions.

In an interview, Mr. McCabe was blunt. “The idea that I was dishonest is just wrong,” he said, adding, “This is part of an effort to discredit me as a witness.”

F.B.I. disciplinary officials recommended his dismissal. Mr. McCabe, who stepped down in January and took a leave of absence, denied the accusation and appealed this week to senior career officials in the Justice Department.

Lack of candor is a fireable offense at the F.B.I., but Mr. McCabe’s last-minute dismissal was carried out against a highly politicized backdrop.

March 17: If you wanted to tell the story of an entire Presidency in a single tweet, you could try the one that President Trump posted after Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired Andrew McCabe, the deputy director of the F.B.I., on Friday night.

On Twitter: Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI - A great day for Democracy. Sanctimonious James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy. He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!

March 17: No, Andrew McCabe Isn't 'Losing His Pension'

Pensions -- public as well as private -- are required to meet certain vesting requirements, and, in fact, the FERS (Federal Employees Retirement System) benefits vest at five years, meaning that benefit accruals cannot be taken away.

[There] are, admittedly, tangible financial losses, but it is grossly misleading that various news outlets are giving the general public the impression that he has lost his pension entirely.

March 17: Andrew McCabe Kept Notes About Conversations With Trump, Gave Them to Mueller

March 21: What's behind Trump's charges about Andrew McCabe's wife?

Trump has publicly criticized [Andrew] McCabe numerous times for supposed bias because his wife was a Democratic candidate for the state senate in Virginia who received campaign contributions from a close ally of Hillary Clinton.

Trump wrote last year on Twitter, incorrectly, that McCabe “got $700,000 from [Hillary] for wife.” He has repeated that claim numerous times, but he also acknowledged that the money for Jill McCabe’s campaign in 2015 actually came from Terry McAuliffe, then the Democratic governor of Virginia.

And just this past weekend, the president ranted on Twitter that “McCabe was caught, called out and fired,” seeming  to intimate that he was fired because of the donations that Jill McCabe’s campaign received from McAuliffe.

“This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally. It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation,” McCabe said after he was fired.

A key fact is that Jill McCabe’s campaign ended before her husband ever had any oversight of the FBI probe into Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified emails.

April 2: Jill McCabe: The president attacked my reputation. It’s time to set the record straight.

Jill McCabe, an emergency room pediatrician, is married to former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe.

I am an emergency room pediatrician and an accidental politician — someone who never thought much about politics until I was recruited to run for state office after making a statement about the importance of expanding Medicaid. That decision — plus some twisted reporting and presidential tweets — ended up costing my husband, Andrew, his job and our family a significant portion of his pension my husband had worked hard for over 21 years of federal service. For the past year and a half of this nightmare, I have not been free to speak out about what happened. Now that Andrew has been fired, I am.

April 13: Justice Department Details Case Against Fired Deputy FBI Director McCabe

The Justice Department on Friday detailed its reasons for recommending that former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe be fired in March, just short of his scheduled retirement.

A report by the department's inspector general confirmed that investigators concluded McCabe had violated Justice Department policy by authorizing an aide to talk with the Wall Street Journal about the FBI's probe into the Clinton Foundation — and that McCabe had "lacked candor" in discussing the matter afterward inside the Justice Department.

An attorney for McCabe, Michael Bromwich, released a statement firing back at the Justice Department conclusions and arguing that McCabe, as deputy director, was well within his authority to arrange for discussions with the press and that he did not "lack candor."

April 13: Andrew McCabe controversies, from the Trump text scandal to his wife's failed campaign

Andrew McCabe has long been under fire, specifically by Republicans who have voiced conflict-of-interest complaints over McCabe's ties to the Democratic Party. Now, a bombshell report released by the Justice Department, reveals the former FBI director misled investigators multiple times about his role in a news media leak, though McCabe denies the allegations.

... McCabe said that his firing was a part of the Trump administration's "war on the FBI," adding that he was being singled out because of the "role I played, the actions I took, and the events I witnessed in the aftermath of the firing of James Comey."

April 20: Andrew McCabe planning several lawsuits over his firing

Ex-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe plans to file lawsuits for defamation, wrongful termination and other claims, his lawyer said Friday.

Attorney Michael Bromwich said McCabe’s legal team was still working out when they plan to file the suits, and that they “want these to be solid. We’ll file when we’re ready,” Axios reported.

Bromwich accused McCabe’s opponents, including President Trump, of “continuing slander,” although he did not specify whom the suits would target.

“We’ve never seen anything like this before. It does damage not only to Andy McCabe individually but also to the FBI as an institution,” he said.

April 27: President Donald Trump claimed a memo that former FBI Director James Comey gave to a friend “in order to get a special counsel against me” was “all classified … totally classified.” That’s wrong. It was unclassified at the time and remains unclassified.

In an April 26 interview on Fox News, Trump also claimed Dr. Jill McCabe, the wife of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, “didn’t even spend” and “kept some of” the nearly $700,000 that her 2015 state Senate campaign received from political groups affiliated with Terry McAuliffe, a longtime friend of Hillary Clinton.

In fact, campaign records show that the money was spent on campaign-related expenses and contributions.

September 6: Federal prosecutors have for months been using a grand jury to investigate former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe — an indication the probe into whether he misled officials exploring his role in a controversial media disclosure has intensified, two people familiar with the matter said.

The grand jury has summoned more than one witness, the people said, and the case is ongoing. The people declined to identify those who had been called to testify.

The presence of the grand jury shows prosecutors are treating the matter seriously, locking in the accounts of witnesses who might later have to testify at a trial. But such panels are sometimes used only as investigative tools, and it remains unclear if McCabe will ultimately be charged.

October 11: Andrew McCabe says his book has been delayed by FBI review

"Having been singled out for irregular unfair treatment over the past year, I am concerned it could be happening again," McCabe said.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/andrew-mccabe-says-his-book-has-been-delayed-fbi-review-n919066

October 18: Based on FBI policy requiring that the FBI have an opportunity to review agency-related information before it's released publicly, McCabe submitted a draft of his book to the FBI more than two months ago, and the book was set to be published in early December. But the FBI has yet to reach a conclusion on McCabe's proposed revelations, so the book's publication date has now been pushed back to February 2019, according to McCabe.

"I am disappointed that we have had to substantially delay the publication date for my book because the FBI's review has taken far longer than they led me to believe it would," McCabe said in a statement to ABC News.

December 18: FBI memos suggest Rosenstein expedited normal review process to fire McCabe before retirement

Newly released internal FBI documents suggest Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein may have accelerated the review of ex-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe's alleged misconduct to ensure he was terminated prior to his retirement, just days before he would have been eligible for a lifetime pension.

In a handwritten note addressed to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Director David Bowdich, the head of the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), Candice Will, stated the agency was following "standard procedures" as part of its probe into allegations that McCabe had lied about leaking sensitive information without authorization to The Wall Street Journal.

"It seems unlikely that this will reach final resolution before Mr. McCabe’s March 18 retirement date, but that is up to the DAG,” Will wrote, referring to Rosenstein. The note was dated March 7, 2018.

Will added that Rosenstein has "final decisionmaking authority over adverse disciplinary actions affecting the DD," referring to McCabe.

On March 5, Hill alerted Bowdich that Rosenstein had been updated on the progress of the McCabe review and that the FBI was "not slow-walking" the matter but instead was following "established procedures."

That same day, Bowdich responded: "Thanks Candice, as you know we will be second-guessed by some every step of the way however this ends up. As long as we follow the regular process we are where we should be on this issue."

But McCabe was summarily fired March 16 for committing three violations of the bureau's ethics code, less than 48 hours before his retirement was set to take effect.

February 14: Andrew McCabe, the former acting director of the FBI, says President Trump's treatment of the bureau and its probe of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign was so profoundly disturbing during the spring of 2017 that Justice Department officials discussed contacting Cabinet members to initiate Trump's removal from office under the 25th Amendment.

That remarkable statement comes from the man who took over when Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017. But it is only the beginning of McCabe's revelations about the relationship between the nation's leading law enforcement agency and the 45th president.
