Undated: Ajit Varadaraj Pai (born January 10, 1973) is an American lawyer who serves as the Chairman of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He is the first Indian American to hold the office. He has served in various positions at the FCC since being appointed to the commission by President Barack Obama in May 2012, at the recommendation of Mitch McConnell. He was confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate on May 7, 2012,[2] and was sworn in on May 14, 2012, for a five-year term.[3]

In January 2017, newly inaugurated president Donald Trump designated Pai as FCC Chairman.[4][5] In March 2017, Trump announced that he would renominate Pai to serve another five-year term (remaining Chairman of the FCC).[6] Pai was confirmed by the U.S. Senate for an additional five-year term on October 2, 2017.[7] Before his appointment to the FCC, Pai held positions with the Department of Justice, the United States Senate, the FCC's Office of General Counsel, and Verizon Communications. Pai is a proponent of repealing net neutrality in the United States and, on December 14, 2017, voted with the majority of the FCC to reverse the decision to regulate the internet under Title II of the Communications Act of 1934.

July 25: FCC Chairman Ajit Pai didn't bend Wednesday to pressure from President Donald Trump, who on Tuesday night slammed as “disgraceful” and “unfair” the FCC decision that likely killed conservative broadcast giant Sinclair Broadcast Group's $3.9 billion merger with Tribune Media.

“I stand by our decision,” Pai told members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee Wednesday afternoon during an oversight hearing.

It's a tense time for Pai. After Trump tapped him to lead the FCC in the earliest days of his administration, Pai has generally avoided any pitfalls with the president. Trump's broadside now puts Pai in a small club of administration officials caught in the president's crossfire.

August 27: Inspector General: Trump Queried FCC’s Ajit Pai on ‘Legal Framework’ of AT&T-Time Warner Merger

Just days before he took office, President Trump met with FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai at Trump Tower, but did not ask him any specific policy questions or about his regulatory philosophy.

Trump was interested in the “legal framework” of the AT&T-Time Warner merger.

That is one of the details in an inspector general’s report, released on Monday, into whether Pai showed favoritism toward Sinclair Broadcast Group, which has ties to the Trump administration. The report found “no evidence, nor even the suggestion, of impropriety, unscrupulous behavior, favoritism towards Sinclair,” but it also provided some details of Pai’s meetings with Trump and contacts with other White House officials.

At the time of the Jan. 16, 2017 meeting, Trump already had expressed his opposition to the AT&T-Time Warner transaction. In the fall of last year, the Justice Department sued to block the transaction, but a federal judge ruled in favor of AT&T and Time Warner, clearing the way for the completion of the merger. The government is appealing the decision.

November 15: President Donald Trump took a gentle swipe at FCC chair Ajit Pai Wednesday (Nov. 15) during a White House ceremony celebrating Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

The President said he was "grateful to have numerous Americans of Indian and Southeast Asian heritage in critical roles in my Administration" and added that they had done an "incredible job."

The President said he was "grateful to have numerous Americans of Indian and Southeast Asian heritage in critical roles in my Administration" and added that they had done an "incredible job."

He pointed out that one in attendance, the first he singled out, was Pai, the son of Indian immigrants. The President asked where Pai was and as he turned to shake his hand took a little off that "incredible."

"I just didn't like one decision he made, but that's alright," he joked, then took a little bit off that "alright," adding: "not even a little bit, but he's independent."

The President did not elaborate, but President Trump is on the record as criticizing the chairman for designating the Sinclair-Tribune deal for hearing, effectively killing it.
